Throughout the school, children are provided with a range of opportunities to develop a love of reading. In early reading, the children are taught phonics following the Little Wandle phonics scheme. Children are encouraged to use key skills including phonetic decoding and comprehension strategies to develop their understanding of a text. Phonetically decodable books are carefully matched and used alongside our reading scheme in Key Stage 1. Collins Reading Scheme is also used in KS2 along with age-appropriate chapter books to both build on reading skills and foster enjoyment in reading.
A love of reading is promoted through library visits, author visits, book fairs and reading events. Children enjoy a range of authors and varied reading materials. Children take part in regular OTTER time (Our Time To Enjoy Reading) across all year groups. Enjoyment of quality texts is shared through focused reading groups, individual and whole class sessions.
